Diabetes is a serious disorder hampering almost every family in the world and we owe this to the way we eat and cooperate with the environment. Undoubtedly, diabetes has not even spared the “Y” generation. We now see individuals in the age group of 20-25 suffering from high blood sugar levels. Let us take a closer look on diabetes.

What do numbers suggest?

In India alone an alarming 77 million people suffer from pre-diabetes out of which 64 million with diabetes which easily makes India the “Diabetes capital of the world.” The numbers are expected to go up to monstrous 87 million constituting 8.4% of the country’s adult population by 2030. Despite such big numbers, what makes diabetes a killer disease is the unfamiliarity associated with it.

Since it is not easily detectable, nature of diabetes is highly astute. It develops steadily over the years and causes immense complications in the early stages. A positive thing is that a little adjustment in the way we live can reverse the effect and will help us in the longer run.

The more frequent warning signs of diabetes are increased hunger, thirst, constant urination and blurred vision. However, the fact remains that there is no symptom and diabetes is often detected when we go for checkups or during fitness test. Earlier, type 2 diabetes was seen in people over 40 years of age. Now, it is prevalent among individuals aged 25-40 years.

The main causes of diabetes are unhealthy lifestyle, bad eating habits, smoking, consuming alcohol, stress, depression.

Besides monitoring the eating habits, one must get rid of packaged food such as chips, burgers, pizzas, etc. Eat a healthy breakfast followed up by a moderate lunch and light dinner. Although it matter what you eat, the thing that matters the most is how much you eat. Don’t gulp anything that you presume is fit for eating.



Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily meal. Choose wholegrain foods instead of refined foods. Sugar free foods are usually loaded with fats, so read the label before consuming. Exercise regularly. If you are overweight then hit the gym as soon as possible. Obesity can make things worse for you. Staying active can actually help you fight diabetes.

It is not that difficult to curb the effects of diabetes. Subtle changes and you can breathe easy.
